Naval Aviation
While most of society’s aviation needs are met by the use of commercial aviation and commercial jetliners, there is still a need for naval aviation. Naval aviation is the use of various aircraft by the Navy and is used in both times of peace and at times of war. The reason that naval aviation is necessary because it enables aircraft to get closer to a location or target than would otherwise be possible. By using an aircraft carrier, aircraft in naval aviation capacities can take off from almost any location and can be airborne in a short amount of time. The aircraft used in naval aviation are utilized in air combat, surface attacks, submarine attacks, various search and rescue operations, transport of materials, weather tracking and observation, reconnaissance, and much more.
Naval aviation has been used since the early 1900s and has played a key role in many military operations over that last century. In naval aviation, air traffic controllers are often located on the aircraft carrier and communicate with the pilots via headsets. These air traffic controllers are able to guide pilots and ensure a greater amount of safety. And because safety is an increasing aspect of successful naval aviation, more regulations are being enacted to ensure that aviation endeavors are as safe as possible. This does not, however, mean that aviation comes with no risks at all. Naval aviation is a risky endeavor, but because of its many uses, is seen to be worth the risk involved.
